"mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's monday, march 18th. in overnight news -- police in alameda are investigating a bar stabbing at a st. patrick's day party. it happened at scobies on

central avenue. tara moriarty has been covering this story for the past two hours. what have you learned? >> reporter: well, the partying turned into fighting here. if we pan over here to the right, you can see there is a section cordoned off. the fight moved over next to that doctor's office where the cop car is sitting out front. right now we have a crew on scene. they have finally arrived to clean up the scene. there's still blood outside. the fight broke out at scobies and park. there were two to three people in a heated argument with two or three others and someone pulled a knife, we believe, and slashed the victim's throat. the victim's condition was hushed to the hospital -- rushed to the hospital. his condition unknown. the suspect took off in a dark

vehicle. investigators will be looking at surveillance video, they will be interviewing the bartender to get a better idea of who they are looking for. at this point, the forensic aspect of the investigation is complete. we understand that no weapon was recovered. alameda police are to be arriving right now at the station and will be providing us with any updates if possible. we'll bring those to you within the next hour. live from alameda, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning, we're tracking an investigation into the shooting death of an elderly man in vallejo. ktvu's alex savidge has been there since 4:30 this morning. where was the victim found and what have you heard about witnesses? >> reporter: well, there are some witnesses, dave. vallejo police this morning -- at this point, are not talking about who the witnesses are or what they may have seen. vallejo police are not saying why this elderly man may have been targeted. but we do know that he was found about 5:30 last night inside a detached garage at a home on the 400 block of

hichborn street on the west side of the city. that garage had apparently been converted into a livivi space. we saw homicide detectives gathering evidence there late into the night last night. now, the victim's name in this case is not being released because his family has yet to be notified. we're working with the sergeant to try to get an update on the investigation. this was vallejo's sixth homicide of the year so far. it'ss about listen a very busy month. they've had three homicides already this month. hoping to get an update from vallejo police at some point in morning. we're live in vallejo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. sheriff's deputies are trying to figure out what left an independent sendary device right near the -- incendiary device right near the state park in aptos. the bomb squad detonated it. it was found beside a car in a dirt parking lot. authority the say it was made out of household cleaning products. the dark was closed for about

an hour ago during that investigation. the official mass to inaugurate pope francis will be held tomorrow. this morning we're learning new details about the ceremony. yesterday, more than 100,000 people crowded into st. peter's square to hear the pope's first sunday prayer from the vatican. this morning, we learned that pope francis will put on a fisherman's ring during the mass that once belonged to pope paul vi and the code of arms will be simple. earlier he met with the president of argentina, which might have been a little awkward since the two clashed over the president's socially liberal policies when the pope was archbishop of buenos aires. joe biden will lead the delegation tomorrow. house democratic leader nancy pelosi is also a member of the delegation along with a bipartisan group of nine leaders that includes anna

eshew biden is the first roman catholic of the united states. today he's meeting with leaders in italy. we'll go live to rome in a few minutes for more on the ceremony. police officers are fan out all over southern california and look they will be looking for drivers as they are texting as they drive or talking while holding cell phones. new statewide numbers show more than 425,000 tickets were passed out for people using their phones as they drive. in 2011, more than 4300 people were killed in crashes that were blamed on distracted driver. if you get a ticket, it can cost you about $159 or more. let's check in with sal. hopefully not too many distracted drivers. >> it doesn't seem like it. there's plenty of time to be waiting around.

for example at the bay bridge toll plaza, we have a back up for 15, 20 minutes. it's interesting, it has not become really way too bad. we're kind of easing into a monday. 15 minutes is not bad for a monday waiting here getting on the bridge. visibility is good. steve's back and he brought his good visibility with him. there are no major problems on 880 in oakland. you can see that traffic is looking good in both directions. we've had some slowing. livermore valley, and the altamont pass coming into the main part of livermore, we've had a lot of fender-benders. i think a lot of people are on the road there. when you reach the 680 interchange, it's better. let's go to sal. we have good visibility. patchy high clouds, patchy low clouds. today is the tweener day. we'll get some cloudy skies in here and then wednesday. sunny, high clouds, cloudy with rain developing. the testimony will probably weaken considerly, maybe .75. any rain after the system?

afternoon in a marshland in sacramento county. it was out by 7:00 last night. firefighters let it burn itself out because no homes were in danger. plus it was hard to get to. at first, air quality district officials say the fire was a prescribed burn. but later changed that to an accidental vegetation fire. however, this is the season for prescribed burns. the burns are allowed to control marsh debris and to control the area for wildlife. this year the period began on march 1st and runs through april 15th. the fires must be deemed necessary by the california department of fish and wildlife. 7:0. in the southern u.s. hot, dry, windy conditions causing two wildfires to rapidly expand. in south carolina, look at this. investigators want to know what caused this fire. it damaged or destroyed more than two dozen buildings. it started saturday in the carolina forest. then it spread to a housing

complex. luckily, no one was hurt. but more than 180 people either lost their homes or their pets in that fire. and almost three dozen cabins were destroyed by fire in eastern tennessee. this one started in dolly parton 'home town. pigeon forge sunday afternoon. it burned property at her amusement park. but officials say the park will open next weekend as scheduled. all right. it is 7:10. more money for oakland police. but it comes with a catch. the reason a new grant could mean officers could be patrolling outside city limits. also ahead -- the co- founder of twitter considering his next career move. why he may not have enough money. there's this island -- and it's got super-cute kangaroos.

mostly sunny in the morning. cooler by the coast. increasing high clouds later today leading to rain tomorrow. all right, steve. 7:13. in indiana two people died, their private jet crashed into a house near the south bend regional airport. two other passengers and one other person on the ground was hurt. the plane was flying from tulsa when it hit three houses and got stuck in one of them. >> all of a sudden, sputtering or something and then boom! nothing else. got real quiet. >> investigators say the many plane was having mechanical problems. a jet fuel leak forced several houses to be evacuated. 7:13. today the supreme court plans to take up the issue of whether people should be required to show proof of u.s. citizenship to vote. political reporter jamie dupree joins us via skype from washington, d.c. this is all about the very controversial law in arizona. right, jamie? >> reporter: right, in fact, i

just walked past the supreme court coming in. there was a pretty healthy crowd in line waiting to see the case, which started a few minutes ago. basically, this law was approved in arizona in 2004. it says that if you are going to register to court, you have to -- vote, you have to show documents to prove you are a u.s. citizen. the obama administration opposes it. they offer it's an effort to keep minorities from voting. those for it, says look, it's very simple. it's to stop noncitizens and especially illegal immigrants from voting in u.s. elections. federal courts have been split on the issue. an appeals court did strike it down. this issue has not gotten a lot of attention. it could prove to be a mid one when the court wraps up its term in june. >> a lot of people wonder if a lot of illegal immigrants are starting to vote and according to one poll, they said .001% of

florida's voters turned out to be illegal. so why there is so much attention for what really is a small problem? >> reporter: i find the answer is a lot like a lot of things in politics. there are two political parties that run in parallel existence and see completely different things. there are a lot of republicans who argue it is a big deal and it's just not paid attention to. a lot of people say it's an issue that fraud is not being addressed properly and you have studies on that the democratic side who say it's hardly an issue at all. it's something that's spurred the political debate and i'm not sure it will be settled. >> the republicans just finished up their big c-pac conventions and one of the pledges was to change some immigration policies, become more friendly to immigrants. so is this something that they've relaxed a little bit on? >> reporter: we'll have to see. i think there will be a very big part from the republican

party. the one thing i think that's working in the favor of immigration reform, if you think about the republican there, there's a very vocal group against any change but you have a lot of agricultural part who would like to see change on those guest worker problems and. the -- but the vocal part, i'm not sure it's going away but it could be outplanked by others in the gop. . >> i want to talk about the budget talk. any compromise? >> reporter: i'm not sure. what we'll have this week, we'll have the house and the senate likely voting on a budget outline for next year, this is a non-binding document. but it sort of sets up the parameters of what the debate will be. the u.s. senate and the house must finish a bill that funds the bill for the rest of the year. two different budgets being

worked on. one of them is still on the senate. they want to move money around and ease the impact of the automatic across-the-board cuts. >> you had -- you bought some girl scout cookies. the beginning of a federal trial about the new york police department's practice of stopping, questioning and frisking people. the class-action lawsuit claims a stop-and-frisk practice violates the rights of minorities. oakland's newly hired police department consultant, william bratton, has supported stop and frisk in other cities. his critics in oakland have protested hiring him because of his support of stop and frisk. a new federal grant would increase staffing elf wills in the oakland police department. but oakland police would also be required to patrol high- crime areas in other parts of alameda county. alameda county agencies are seeking a $67 million grant to hire 90,000 officers, sheriff deputies and chp officers for a crime-suppression unit. that unit would target high crime areas all over the county. the city council is expected to for extra money for additional police academies and they want to double sheriff patrols.

7:19. the man who foe counted twitter and the -- cofounded twitter is looking ahead to his next career. jack dorsey says here's serious about moving to new york some day and running for mayor. dorsey is worth more than a billion dollars. but that's still well short of the fortune. michael bloomberg is worth an estimated $25 billion. a new report shows three of the four companies paying the most in corporate income tax are based out here in the bay area. fourth on the list is wells fargo which paid did the 9.1 billion in income tax. apple ranked third, paying more than 14 billion and chevron in san ramon paid $20 billion in income tax last year. that puts it second overall, the biggest rival of texas topped the list and paid $31 billion. the chp investigates whether reckless driving may have led to last night's fiery crash in walnut creek that

killed a motorcyclist. it happened on 680 south of rudgear road around 6:00 p.m. the crash involved four cars, one of which burst into flames. witnesses say the motorcycle and another vehicle appear to be driving recklessly before that crash. services are scheduled today for the three people killed in a daly city crash earlier this month. a viewing is scheduled for 50- year-old yosefa acevado and her 23 and 15-year-old sons. funeral services are scheduled tomorrow. police say the family was pulling out of their driveway when their car was hit by 23- year-old dennis macedo. police say he was everyone look the scene of another -- leaving the scene of another accident. he faces homicide charges as well as hit and run. wet weather is heading our way. up next, meteorologist steve paulson will tell us if the storm is expected to bring

bay area cities are fighting back against copper thieves with new technology. thieves have stolen copper wire from light poles, traffic signals and b.a.r.t. tracks in the past few years. the thieves get hundreds of dollars for the copper at recycling centers but it costs thousands of dollars to repair the damage. now some cities are using tiny tracking devices in the wire that identify where it is from and can provide evidence the copper is stolen. 7:24. more people in silicon valley, they are riding mass transit to

their jobs. vta says ridership is up 20% on express bus service compared to a year ago. ridership is up the most near lockheed martin and the moffett park employment area. the vta says faster travel times, reading lights and free wi-fi is all part of why there is an increase in the briders. the 20 hybrid buses out there, carry more than 4600 passengers every day. 7:24. want to check in again with sal who is starting in the south bay. how is traffic looking there, sal? >> it's getting busier. westbound 237. you can see it's pretty much normal, which means slow traffic out out of milpitas, to this point at stager road and then frees up to 101. we're looking at some of the other commutes. bay bridge is crowded. that's about a 20, 25-minute delay. we haven't had any problems on the brick. chp is not reporting a lot. i keep looking at the list. we don't have a lot going on. we have a new crash.

underway. hello, ben. >> reporter: the italian authorities are saying they are expecting as many as 1 million people at this ceremony, although vatican authorities themselves say only about 250,000 people fit within st. peter's square and this road behind me, leading up to the square. now, we understand that at about 8:50 in the morning, local time, pope francis is going to go into his pope mobile, drive around the square, obviously security is going to be tight. there will be metal detectors around st. peter's square itself. a lot of police will be onhand. one of the worries of the vatican security is that this pope is being described as the quote/unquote unpredictable pope. yesterday, when he left mass inside the vatican, he walked down the street out of the gates of the vatican itself. the security very concerned that he is a man who just likes to break from protocol and do

what he likes. so that's one of the concerns. we're also expecting a lot of vips here. vice president joe biden will be here and angela merkel, the chancellor of germany, also coming is the president of zimbabwe as well as christina kurchner, the president of argentina, a woman, who in the past, has flashed with pope francis when he was arch bishop, a point of disagreement. the fact that the argentinian government was distributing free contraceptives and was advocating same-sex marriage. however, the president of argentina did meet with the pope this morning. the honeymoon continues in the vatican city. >> and i'm just curious about the weather. last week it was pretty stormy. is it supposed to be a little

nicer tomorrow? all right. well, unfortunately, we lost our contact with ben there in rome. but once again, we'll be covering the inauguration of pope francis. that's happening tomorrow morning. new this morning, unhappy postal workers will soon gather outside moscone convention center. ktvu channel 2 reporter, brian flores joins us live to explain why their very livelihood could be at state. brian? >> reporter: the protest is scheduled to take place at 9:00 this morning here in san francisco. unhappy postal workers in the bay area say they are upset that six-day delivery is ending. but they also fear that jobs and maybe their wages may be taken away. the protest itself is being organized by the american postal workers and mail handlers union. they will be here taking place in the city. protesters say they want the postal service to take place and keep saturday delivery and keep the wages like they are.

the post of a service says the cuts -- postal service says the cuts are needed. patrick donahue plans on speaking this morning. they say this is necessary. >> if they just sat in their offices of washington, they wouldn't get the feel of what the mailers diddant wand out of the industry. you know, because the industry is changing. >> reporter: and the conference itself is drawing criticism because it costs at least $2 million to put on. the postal service is millions in the red. supporters say this helps it generate new business. we hope to talk with someone from the postal service as well as a protester coming up in the next hour. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. there is a new report out that says diversity is a big issue for silicon valley tech companies. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose. she's been out there since 4:30 this morning to tell us how the companies are responding.

janine? >> reporter: dave, we are getting a lot of opinions on twitter as well as here at the deardon station. nobody is surprised to hear lack of diversity is happening. but industrial analysts say not a lot of people are talking about it and if if it is a problem -- if it is a problem. cnn started the investigation to ask for diversity data on the employees. only 5 of the 20 companies responded even after they filed a freedom of information act request. the of company that did provide the information requests show that women and ethic my torties are -- ethnic minorities, the numbers are low. >> i think the women and minorities should reach further instead of settling for the

quick college, you know like -- i think they should reach further in their education and career. >> you went to ivy league and you have all of this experience, you will have a better chance of these jobs. if you are applying for a job online, it will be start to do that. so for minorities they are probably at a disadvantage. >> reporter: cnn said in their study, it was difficult to gain that information because they refuse to give up their equal opportunity data. those companies included apple, google and hp among others, according to cnn. this refusal to release the data they say shows a lack of willness -- willingness. back to you. >> thank you, janine. we want to check in with sal and see what's happening on the roads. >> we have a new crash reported about 20 minutes ago -- not even 20. i would say more like 20.

southbound 101 near cesar chavez. northbound traffic is slow. but so is southbound 101, slowing down to the cesar chavez exit. it was reported blocking one of the lanes. the alternate route would be on 280. go down to 6th street and get on 280 there and bypass this whole thing. that would be a pretty decent alternate. i would say northbound 280 is a good alternate just to avoid the james lick freeway for now. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. a crash in san francisco that's serious will affect the been because the people getting off the -- will affect the bay bridge, because people getting off the bay bridge will have to deal with this. westbound 24, near the la fayette exit there's word of a crash on the shoulder. it's kind of minor. we're looking at the commute in livermore valley. that's been terrible. really no letup in that. we had earlier problems. it's solid coming out of tracy.

it doesn't get better until you are in the main part of livermore. let's go to steve. >> thank you. mostly clear skies. a few high clouds in advance of a system which will be here later today. sunny for a while and then high clouds, cloudy with rain developing. rain, i know. it's been rather dry here since the beginning of the year. it looks like one system will take us into wednesday around noon or so and then more rain, no. one more system and then drier weather comes right back in on thursday and takes us into the weekend. not a bad-looking system coming in from midlatitude. it's taking in a lot of moisture with it. it just doesn't have a lot of cold air and dynamics. but it looks like it will give us something. maybe a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain. heaviest amounts definitely to the north. patches of low clouds. clouds increase in the afternoon. cool to mild. a little cooler by the coast. we're picking up more of a westerly breeze there. 37 santa rosa, a lot of 44s in here. 46 oakland, 47, san francisco.

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> and good morning. i'm dave clark. in overnight news, a man is in the hospital with a neck wound from a bar stabbing. it happened after a st. paddy's day party in alameda. police say he was stabbed at scobee's on central avenue on central boulevard. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: neighbors are not surprised at all by this. they say every weekend the partying gets out of control and they hope the bar owner faces consequences. just a few moments ago, the crews arrived, they cleaned up the blood off the sidewalk. they are still working at it right now. in front of the doctor's office there at park. this fight broke out at 2:00 in the morning inside the bar and moved into the street. police say there was a group of two to three people in a heated argument with two or three others and someone pulled what

the release of that online video this morning is, once again, fueling speculation she's planning another run for the white house. we are following developing news from florida. all classes canceled until noontime at the university of central florida. 500 students were evacuated overnight from a dorm after someone called 911 and reported a person with a gun. police later found someone dead in a dorm room with what appears to be a self-inflicted gun wound. there was an assault weapon, a hand gun and explosives near his body. police say there's no threat to the campus right now. we're learning more this morning about the 6th homicide investigation in vallejo this year. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is live in vallejo with information on a key witness in the death of an elderly man. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. there was one solid witness police have in this case.

but at this point, vallejo police don't know why this elderly man was targeted e was found shot to death inside this detached garage around 5:30 last (. it's a space that's been converted -- last night. it's a space that's been converted into a living area. i knocked on the door. the person inside said she didn't want to talk about what happened last night. officers responded to a call of shots fired on hichborn street on the city's west side. that's when the man's body was discovered. the victim's not is not -- is not being released. they are still trying to notify family. they have one solid witness in this case but they are not saying exactly what that person may have seen. as we bring you back out here live, this is the scene of the crime from last night, this deadly shooting that took place. i did check in with vallejo police this morning. i've checked in with them several times. we haven't been able to get an

welcome back. 8:29. happening now -- angry postal workers are gathering outside san francisco's moscone convention center. ktvu's brian flores is right there with them to tell us why the workers are upset about a conference their bosses are attending. >> reporter: well, this protest is scheduled to take place around 9:00 this morning. there's already a few that are already organizing here. this member -- this woman here is actually a member of the community. but they are expecting at least 50 unhappy protesters, many of them who work for the postal service in the bay area. they say they are upset that six-day delivery is ending and they fear that job, and their wages may be reduced or taken away. now, the protest itself is being organized by the american postal workers and handlers' union. protesters say they want the postal service to stop this movement toward privatization. they want to keep saturday delivery and keep wages the way

they are. the postal service says cuts are needed because revenue is not there e-mail with the advent of e-mail. >> if they just sat in their offices in washington, they couldn't get the feelers of what the mailers want and need out of the industry because the industry is changing. >> reporter: now, the conference itself is drawing criticism because it cost at least $2 million to put on. critics say because the postal service is millions in the red. it should be doing everything it can to penny pinch. but supporters say conferenciers like this plan to generate new business. we'll have another report for the news at noon. back to you. 8:31. well, today, the faa is expected to tell us its final decision on which small to medium airports are gonna have

their towers closed because of those sequester budget cuts. earlier reports said it was concord, santa rosa, napa, san carlos and livermore as possibilities here in the bay area. the closures will begin next month. pilots will still be able to take off and land at those airports but instead of talking to air traffic controllers, the pilots are gonna have to talk directly to each other. 8:31. this morning, sheriff deputies are trying to figure out who left an incendiary device near the entrance of nisine state park in aptos. the bomb squat detonated the device last month. authorities say the device was made from household cleaning products. aptos park was closed for about an hour during the investigation. later on today, we may find out if all of that smoke from a grass fire yesterday near antioch had hazardous materials. residents in antioch and brentwood were pretty concerned

about all of this dark smoke rising from the field. it started about 2:30 yesterday afternoon in a marshland. the fire was out by 7:00 last night. firefighters let it burn itself out because no homes were in danger, plus it was just hard to get to it. at first, air quality district officials said the fire was a prescribed burn. later on they changed that to saying it was an accidental vegetation fire. this is the season for prescribed burns. those burns are allowed to control peculiar, debris. also, it helps the wildlife in the area. this year the permissive burn period began march 1st. it will continue through april 15th. the fires have to be deemed necessary by the california department of fish and wildlife. 8:33. hot, dry, windy conditions fueled two wildfires in the southern u.s. the fire risk in south carolina has diminished but there were more than 130

information. according to cnn, apple, google and hp, among other big names, actually had the department of labor block the releasing of their data, citing it would cause competitive harm. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:35. bay area cities are now using high technology to fight back against copper thieves. thieves have been stealing copper wire from light poles, traffic signals and b.a.r.t. tracks recently. the thieves get hundreds of dollars for the copper when they take it to recycling centers but the repairs from all of the damage they cause is in the thousands of dollars. some cities are using tiny tracking devices to help identify where that wire is from and they can also give evidence that the copper is really stolen. in about two weeks, police officers will fan out all over california as part of a distracted driving crackdown campaign. police will be looking for driverses who are texting while they -- drivers when are taxing
